Andalusia demands government unblock vital hydraulic infrastructure

The Junta de Andalucía has formally requested an urgent meeting with the Spanish government to unblock nearly one hundred vital hydraulic infrastructure projects. Regional Minister Ramón Fernández-Pacheco highlighted that projects such as the Alcolea Dam, Gibralmedina, and Cerro Blanco remain in a state of stagnation, hindering the region's ability to manage water resources and prepare for future droughts.

In response, Secretary of State for the Environment Hugo Morán defended the central government's investment pace, stating that significant efforts have been made in water supply and sanitation over the last eight years. Morán emphasized that the Ministry is prioritizing the modernization and safety of Spain's extensive dam network. He also noted that several large-scale projects, including two desalination plants, are currently in the final stages of the bidding process.

Separately, regarding flood management, Morán informed the Senate that updating flood zone maps is a complex legal and technical process that requires at least two years. He maintained that real-time information from Aemet and hydrological authorities was available during the recent DANA event to allow administrations to take preventive measures, such as suspending classes or limiting mobility.
