Andalusia towns host historic medieval festivals

Purchena celebrates the 23rd edition of the Juegos Moriscos Abén Humeya, a cultural, sporting and social event that recreates the atmosphere of the town in 1569. Declared a National Tourist Interest of Andalusia, the three‑day festival was inaugurated by José Antonio García Alcaina, president of the Diputación de Almería, together with regional officials and mayor José Luis Serrano. It features traditional competitions such as chess, morisco wrestling, archery, stone‑lifting, triple jump and horse‑riding, alongside music, gastronomy and artisan markets.

In Monturque, the 22nd Jornadas Medievales opened under mayor Antonio Castro. The medieval market, craft demonstrations, falconry shows and performances transform the historic centre, with visits to the castle, Roman cisterns and the San Rafael cemetery. The programme, supported by local associations and volunteers, aims to boost tourism, cultural awareness and the town’s economy through immersive historical activities.
