Spanish agricultural sector sees rising produce values despite volume shifts

The Spanish agricultural sector is experiencing varied trends across key produce categories. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food projects a citrus production of 5.74 million tons for the 2026/27 campaign, a 1.1% increase from the previous year. While favorable water conditions helped, high summer temperatures reduced orange and clementine yields. In Valencia, citrus fruit that does not meet fresh market standards is being repurposed for the cosmetics and perfumery industries.

In the tomato sector, Andalusia has seen a trend of reduced volumes but increased economic value. For the 2025-2026 campaign, tomato availability was limited, leading to a 24% increase in average production prices. While export volumes for tomatoes and peppers in Andalusia have decreased, their total market value has risen. Specifically, tomato exports saw an 8% increase in value despite a 4% drop in volume.

Other developments include a strong start to the pomegranate season in Spain due to high demand and limited Mediterranean competition. Additionally, long-term data shows a decline in per capita vegetable consumption in Spain, even as the cost of these products has risen significantly over the last decade.
