Andalusian Parties Reconfigure Senate Seats Ahead of New Term

Spain’s Andalusian political parties are using the appointment of senators to settle internal power balances ahead of the next legislative period. The regional parliament will designate nine senators – five for the People’s Party (PP), three for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and one for Vox – a process that carries significant political weight.

The PP, under regional president Juanma Moreno, is cementing the influence of longtime party figure Javier Arenas, who marks eighteen years in the Senate and serves as the party’s spokesperson there. The party is also positioning allies in senior roles: former parliamentary president Jesús Aguirre will resign to allow the PP to honor its agreement with Vox by granting the first vice‑presidency of the Senate’s board to Beatriz Sánchez. Ana Mestres is set to become the fourth woman elected president of the Andalusian Parliament, while former Sevilla PP leader Virginia Pérez and ex‑Málaga deputy Francisco Javier Oblaré are among those slated for Senate seats.

These moves aim to resolve longstanding internal debts and refresh the party’s leadership roster before the upcoming elections, while also reinforcing the PP‑Vox alliance within the Upper House.
