Jesús Aguirre Resigns as President of Andalusian Parliament

Jesús Aguirre, who served as Andalusia’s health minister during the COVID‑19 pandemic and has led the regional parliament for the past four years, announced his resignation as president of the Andalusian Parliament. The step fulfills the power‑sharing agreement between the People’s Party (PP) and Vox, which grants Vox the first vice‑presidency of the chamber. Aguirre’s resignation will take effect at the plenary session scheduled for 23 July, when Ana Mestre, currently the first vice‑president, will assume the presidency on behalf of Vox.

Following his announcement, Aguirre delivered a farewell speech to the parliamentary spokespersons, apologising for any mistakes and stating, “pido perdón a sus señorías si alguna vez les he faltado.” He also indicated that he will continue to represent Andalusia as a senator, a position the PP intends to allocate to him within its regional senatorial quota. Opposition parties criticised the move, describing it as a “baile de sillas” and questioning the short‑term nature of the appointment.

The resignation marks a key moment in the newly formed PP‑Vox coalition government in Andalusia, reshaping the leadership of the region’s legislative body and signalling the coalition’s influence over parliamentary structures.
