Navarra drug lab dismantled as prosecutors warn of institutional corruption

Spanish authorities have dismantled a major synthetic drug laboratory in Navarra through Operation Malandrona-Nautilus. Conducted over ten phases by the Guardia Civil and Policía Foral, the operation resulted in 20 arrests, with 10 individuals being sent to prison. Law enforcement seized over 220 kilograms of narcotics, including 192 kilograms of speed, MDMA, cocaine, hashish, and ecstasy tablets, along with precursors like methanol and sulfuric acid.

Separately, legal experts and prosecutors have raised alarms regarding the evolution of organized crime in Spain. During the Foro La Toja, Ana Villagómez, the anti-drug prosecutor for Andalusia, warned that criminal networks are increasingly attempting to infiltrate state institutions, security forces, and strategic infrastructure such as ports and airports.

Villagómez emphasized that the rise in cocaine trafficking has provided criminal organizations with massive financial resources, allowing them to expand their logistics and potentially corrupt judicial and security officials. She argued that Spain currently lacks the necessary tools to combat this 21st-century criminality, which operates like a sophisticated business, and called for a strategic shift toward attacking the financial and logistical structures of these networks.
