Andalusian towns advance major civic and transport projects

The Algeciras City Council has issued a tender to transform the former medical office on Avenida La Cañá in the La Bajadilla neighbourhood into a new civic centre. With a budget exceeding €950,000, the work is part of the "Distrito Paco de Lucía" revitalisation programme and is co‑financed by the European Regional Development Fund (2021‑2027). The renovation will make the building fully accessible, add an elevator, install modern safety and climate systems, and create a social‑work unit, a 120 m² ludoteca, training rooms, a 90‑seat auditorium and office space for the local residents’ association. The project also includes a new playground, street upgrades and a renovated plaza in front of the building.

Separately, the Cádiz municipal government will approve, on 29 March, an extraordinary council session to launch a public tender for the first formal urban bus contract in the city’s 120‑year history. After more than a decade of drafting the tender documents and receiving approval from the Junta de Andalucía’s Advisory Council, the contract will span twelve years and replace the long‑standing informal arrangement that began with tram service in 1906 and continued with buses without a formal agreement. The tender aims to select a private operator to run Cádiz’s urban transport system.
