Andaman and Nicobar Command hosts strategic conclave on maritime security

A Strategic Leaders' Conclave was held at the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) to mark its Silver Jubilee. The event brought together former Commanders-in-Chief and senior military leaders to discuss the strategic evolution of the archipelago and the future of India's tri-services strategy.

Discussions centered on the growing importance of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the role of the ANC in advancing India's maritime interests within the Indo-Pacific. The archipelago is situated near the Strait of Malacca, a critical maritime choke point through which approximately 35-40 per cent of global shipborne cargo passes. The proximity of the islands to this strait is noted for its strategic sensitivity, particularly as China moves nearly 80 per cent of its crude imports through the area.

As India considers the implementation of theatre commands, officials emphasized the necessity of synergy between the Navy, Air Force, Army, and the Indian Coast Guard. Maintaining a constant vigil is required to manage the 836 islands, address maritime challenges, and monitor the movement of smugglers and traffickers from neighboring regions.
