Andau Bridge hosts commemoration for 70th anniversary of Hungarian Revolution

An Austrian-Hungarian commemoration ceremony was held at the Andau Bridge to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The event honored the thousands of people who fled Hungary for the West following the suppression of the uprising against communist rule and Soviet occupation.

During the event, officials highlighted the historical significance of the bridge, which served as a vital escape route. Local leaders, including Mayor Philipp Pelzer, praised the humanitarian efforts of the regional population who provided shelter and resources to the arriving refugees.

A new memorial platform was inaugurated near the bridge. This wooden structure features a terrace for viewing the area and includes texts and images documenting the history of the flight and the subsequent humanitarian aid.
