Andean bear sightings in Machetá prompt wildlife monitoring

The Corporación Autónoma Regional de Cundinamarca (CAR) has initiated special monitoring in the Machetá municipality following reports of an Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) interacting with livestock in the Quebrada Honda rural area.

Local residents reported that the bear attacked two cattle: an adult male and an eight-month-old heifer. During a field inspection, officials found the heifer with dorsal wounds consistent with a bear attack, while the male bovine was not located. Evidence, including tracks and video footage provided by the community, confirmed the presence of the species. Authorities believe the bear's presence may be linked to available food sources, noting the presence of carcasses in the area.

In response, the CAR, in coordination with the Machetá Mayor's Office and the Cundinamarca Governor's Office, held a meeting with approximately 40 local residents to address community concerns. Planned mitigation actions include the installation of camera traps to strengthen wildlife monitoring and prevent further negative interactions.
