Andean bear spotted near Casitagua forest fire in Quito

An Andean bear was spotted in the Rayocucho area near Quito, Ecuador, as it searched for food following a major forest fire at Casitagua hill. Quito Mayor Pabel Muñoz reported the sighting, noting that the animal's movement is a direct consequence of the fire destroying vegetation and habitats.

In response to the sighting, Chocó Andino park rangers have been activated to monitor local wildlife and assess the impact of the fire on the ecosystem. The Andean bear is considered a vulnerable species in Ecuador.

Emergency efforts to combat the fire remain active. The Quito Fire Department reported that over 200 hectares had been affected by Friday morning. The response includes more than 90 firefighters, 60 emergency management personnel, and 20 vehicles, supplemented by aerial water drops from the Fire Department, Armed Forces, and National Police. On September 17, 2026, the Metropolitan District of Quito recorded a total of nine forest fires.
