Andean cat sightings provide conservation hope in Argentina and Chile

Camera traps have provided significant conservation data regarding the Andean cat, one of the most threatened felids in the Americas. In Argentina, footage captured a female Andean cat and her cub for the first time in the Malargüe area of Mendoza province, near the La Payunia protected area. Experts from WCS Argentina suggest these sightings indicate a healthy population in the Patagonian steppe.

In Chile, community monitoring in the Cajón del Maipo has revealed that the species also relies on lower valleys for survival, following a 2022 sighting of an adult pair and two cubs. These findings emphasize the importance of protecting both high-altitude zones and valleys to ensure the species' coexistence with local communities and livestock producers.
