Andean Community nations plan Single Sky to reduce airfares

Member nations of the Andean Community (CAN)—Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru—have approved a roadmap to implement the ‘Andean Single Sky’ initiative. The project aims to reduce airfare prices, increase direct connections, and streamline commercial and tourist transit within the subregion.

Following a ministerial meeting in Quito, technical committees will begin working to harmonize aeronautical regulations, design a common passenger recognition system, and strengthen operational security at border points. The goal is to treat flights between these four nations similarly to domestic flights, simplifying migratory and customs controls to reduce airline operating costs.

In addition to aviation, ministers defined a roadmap for an Andean Intracommunity Cabotage Regime to improve the transport of goods via maritime and multimodal routes. Peru, which currently holds the pro tempore presidency of the CAN until 2027, will oversee technical studies throughout the year to advance the initiative.
