Andean regions face heavy snow and wind forecasts

Severe weather is forecasted for the Andean regions of Argentina and Chile over the coming weekend.

In San Juan, Argentina, a yellow alert has been issued for the mountain range. Heavy snowfall is expected between 30 and 70 centimeters, particularly in high-altitude areas. The storm will move through the Iglesia department on Friday, reach Calingasta on Saturday, and affect both areas on Sunday. Strong westerly winds with gusts potentially exceeding 90 km/h are expected, which may reduce visibility and complicate travel in high mountain sectors.

In the Coquimbo Region of Chile, meteorologists predict snowfall in the mountains with accumulations up to 40 cm. The weather event is expected to occur in two stages: an initial period of atmospheric instability between Thursday and Friday, followed by a frontal system from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. While snow will be concentrated at higher altitudes, coastal and valley areas may experience light, sporadic showers.
