Andean snow accumulation expected to increase river flows in Argentina and Chile

Significant snow accumulation in the Andes mountains is expected to increase river flows in parts of Argentina and Chile. In San Juan, Argentina, experts describe the current snow levels as a “historic event.” Mario Hernández, sustainability manager for the Los Azules project, warned that the province must prepare for potential rapid snowmelt, noting that the speed of runoff will depend on spring and summer temperatures.

In the Coquimbo Region of Chile, recent precipitation and snow have reversed a seven-year trend of low river flows. According to the CEAZA Climate Bulletin, regional reservoir levels reached 56% capacity by the end of August. While current river values in the Elqui, Limarí, and Choapa provinces remain below historical seasonal averages, projections indicate a significant increase in water volumes over the coming months and into next year.
