Ander Herrera discusses Marcelo Bielsa and Juan Román Riquelme

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has shared reflections on his professional career, specifically regarding his time under manager Marcelo Bielsa at Athletic Club and his experiences at Boca Juniors.

Herrera described Bielsa as the most peculiar and intense coach he has encountered, noting the manager’s obsessive focus on football. He recounted how Bielsa would interrupt rest periods to analyze opponent tactics and once held a meeting in the dressing room while nearly undressed to explain a specific tactical point. Herrera expressed gratitude for the experience despite the intense, 24/7 football lifestyle Bielsa demands.

Regarding his time in Argentina, Herrera identified Juan Román Riquelme as the greatest idol in the history of Boca Juniors. While acknowledging legends like Diego Maradona and Carlos Tévez, Herrera emphasized Riquelme’s unique status, citing his international achievements and lasting impact on the club. Herrera played 29 official matches for Boca Juniors between January 2025 and June 2026.
