Andes glacier retreat prompts early warning sensor proposals

Climate change is accelerating glacier retreat in the Andes, increasing the risk of floods and landslides. Glaciologist Lucas Ruiz notes that while not every ice detachment leads to catastrophe, warming temperatures act as a catalyst that intensifies natural hazards, particularly when infrastructure or populations are located in valleys below.

To mitigate these risks, the National Institute for Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (INAIGEM) has identified over 500 potentially dangerous glacial lakes. Experts are proposing the installation of early warning systems to monitor these sites in real time. The proposed technology includes ultrasonic water level sensors, automated weather stations, and high-resolution cameras connected via satellite. These tools aim to provide automated alerts to local civil protection centers, allowing for timely responses to sudden water releases caused by ice collapses or heavy rainfall.
