Andes hantavirus unlikely to cause large outbreaks, study finds
A study published in Eurosurveillance by researchers from Italy’s ISS and the Bruno Kessler Foundation used mathematical modeling to assess the epidemic potential of the Andes hantavirus, the strain linked to recent cases on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The analysis indicates that, even in a fully susceptible population, a single index case would likely generate fewer than 50 infections over four months, and the outbreak would have a high probability of dying out, especially if more than half of the cases are isolated promptly.
The virus’s epidemiological traits—typically symptomatic, severe disease, a long incubation period, and a delayed onset of secondary cases—provide health authorities extra time to identify contacts and implement isolation before individuals become contagious. The authors note that the findings are based on parameters from a single outbreak and may not fully apply to different settings, but they reinforce international health agencies’ assessment of a low to very low risk of widespread transmission. Rapid diagnosis and effective case isolation remain the primary tools to interrupt any community spread of Andes hantavirus.
