Cristo Redentor International Pass reopens after month-long snow closure

The Cristo Redentor International Pass, a vital commercial and tourist link between Argentina and Chile, has reopened to all types of vehicles following a closure of nearly 40 days caused by extreme snowstorms. After an initial phase dedicated exclusively to clearing massive backlogs of cargo trucks, the border was opened to passenger buses and private vehicles for the weekend of August 22-23.

During the closure, which began in mid-July, thousands of heavy vehicles were stranded, causing significant economic disruption. Estimates suggest the blockage caused losses of approximately R$ 100 million for Brazilian transport companies. To manage the backlog, authorities implemented a phased reopening, prioritizing cargo movement from Chile to Argentina before allowing general transit.

Despite the reopening, authorities have issued warnings regarding upcoming weather patterns. Forecasts indicate new snowstorms and adverse climatic conditions are expected to return to the high mountains starting Monday, August 24, which could potentially lead to further closures. Travelers are advised to carry snow chains and monitor official updates.
