Andhra Pradesh local body elections face allegations of malpractice and violence
The upcoming local body elections in Andhra Pradesh have become a flashpoint for political conflict between the ruling TDP-led alliance and the opposition YSRCP. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has called for strict alliance discipline among the TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP, urging party workers to coordinate closely to ensure a united front at the grassroots level.
Conversely, the YSRCP has leveled serious allegations of an “election mafia” operating within the state. Party leaders, including Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy and former Minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy, claim that TDP members, in collusion with police and election officials, have used intimidation, physical attacks, and the tearing of nomination papers to prevent YSRCP candidates from contesting. Some YSRCP leaders have even alleged a corruption racket involving large sums of money paid to facilitate uncontested victories.
The Supreme Court has intervened, directing the State Election Commission to examine complaints of violence and ensure candidate protection. Following reports of obstructions, the SEC extended nomination periods for certain municipal bodies. Amidst these tensions, the ruling alliance is finalizing seat-sharing arrangements for various Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad positions.
