Andhra Pradesh CM to challenge High Court BC quota ruling in Supreme Court
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced that his government will appeal to the Supreme Court following a High Court ruling that quashed government orders providing 34 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court struck down the orders on October 1, stating that the reservation arrangement was contrary to the legal framework and that total reservations must remain within the 50 per cent ceiling prescribed by the Supreme Court. The court also questioned the empirical data used by the state to justify the 34 per cent quota.
Speaking at a pension distribution programme in Repalle, Naidu reaffirmed the NDA government’s commitment to the political, social, and economic empowerment of BC communities. He noted that the quota had been restored to 34 per cent after a previous administration had reduced it to 24 per cent.
