Andhra Pradesh highways: 384 accident-prone corridors identified

The Indian government has identified 384 accident-prone “black corridor” stretches on national highways in Andhra Pradesh. This determination is based on accident data compiled between 2023 and 2025.

East Godavari district recorded the highest number of these corridors with 46, followed by Anakapalle with 33, SPSR Nellore with 31, and Srikakulam with 30. Other districts with significant counts include Kakinada, Krishna, NTR, and Visakhapatnam. Several corridors span across district boundaries, including stretches between Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, and Krishna and Eluru.

The identification process utilized artificial intelligence-based tools developed by IIT-Kanpur, analyzing data from the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) system. Nationally, 6,358 such stretches have been identified.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari stated that rectification is an ongoing process. Short-term safety measures include improved road markings, signage, crash barriers, and highway lighting. Long-term interventions involve improving road geometry, widening carriageways, and constructing underpasses or overpasses, though these may be delayed by land acquisition and forest clearance requirements.
