A Parliament-appointed inquiry committee has found all three charges against former High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma to be proven. The findings were detailed in a report tabled in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The investigation centered on the discovery of a substantial quantity of unexplained Rs 500 denomination notes in a storeroom at Justice Varma's official residence in New Delhi. The incident occurred following a fire at the premises on March 14-15, 2025. The committee noted that the storeroom was disturbed before it could be properly sealed and inspected, which compromised the preservation of material evidence.

The panel concluded that Justice Varma failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source, ownership, or presence of the cash. His responses were described as 'evasive, incomplete and misleading.' While the committee did not establish personal ownership of the money in a criminal sense, it held that the conduct failed to meet the standards of transparency and institutional responsibility expected of a constitutional court judge. Justice Varma resigned from the Allahabad High Court in April 2026, rendering impeachment proceedings infructuous.
