Andhra Pradesh launches ‘Great Green Wall’ to protect coastline

The government of Andhra Pradesh has launched the ‘Great Green Wall’ initiative, a large-scale coastal afforestation project designed to create a natural shield against cyclones, strong winds, and sea erosion. The project utilizes a multi-tiered approach to build a layered green buffer along the state's coastline.

The first phase focuses on the restoration of mangrove forests to protect tidal and wetland ecosystems. The second phase involves the establishment of palm forests across approximately 5,498 hectares. These palm groves are intended to act as a windbreak and stabilize soil through extensive root systems to prevent coastal erosion.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan stated that the initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience and protect coastal communities from natural disasters. To support the drive, officials are working to collect and plant millions of seeds and seedlings to revive ecosystems that have faced decades of degradation due to encroachment and deforestation.
