Andhra Pradesh school enrollment claims disputed by YS Jagan

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, leader of the YSR Congress Party and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has challenged the current state government's claims regarding increased enrollment in government schools. Citing Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) data for the 2025-26 academic year, Jagan alleged a significant decline in public school attendance.

According to the data cited, government school enrollment fell from 4,050,116 students in the 2023-24 academic year to 3,493,450 in 2025-26, representing a decrease of over 5.56 lakh students. Jagan further noted that the number of government schools decreased from 45,000 to 44,222, and government-aided schools dropped from 991 to 797 during the same period.

Jagan contested the state government's assertion that 1.10 lakh students had shifted from private to government institutions. He argued that while government school enrollment declined, enrollment in private management schools increased from 4,553,380 to 4,840,296 between the 2023-24 and 2025-26 academic years.
