Andhra Pradesh SEC enforces code of conduct for local elections

The State Election Commission (SEC) of Andhra Pradesh has implemented a Model Code of Conduct and strict disciplinary measures to ensure free, fair, and peaceful local body elections. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha warned that officials found negligent in maintaining law and order or managing the nomination process will face disciplinary actions, including suspension and transfer.

Key directives include the installation of CCTV cameras at nomination centers and strict limits on personnel allowed inside during filing. To ensure a level playing field, the code prohibits ministers and authorities from sanctioning new grants, announcing financial schemes, or making ad hoc appointments once elections are announced. Additionally, political parties are barred from activities that aggravate communal, religious, or linguistic differences.

Security arrangements are being heightened across all districts. Police machinery is on high alert, with sensitive areas identified for increased personnel. The guidelines also regulate the use of loudspeakers, prohibit the distribution of liquor during critical polling periods, and require candidates to maintain detailed accounts of election expenditures.
