Andhra Pradesh SEC halts local body elections following Supreme Court order
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has suspended the election process for 100 Urban Local Bodies, including 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats. This action follows a Supreme Court directive issued after a petition by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
The Supreme Court ordered the SEC to postpone the publication of the final list of candidates until October 25. The court also instructed the Commission to review representations and evidence regarding allegations that candidates were prevented from filing nominations due to law and order issues, including violence and intimidation.
In compliance with these orders, State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha has extended the nomination process by 48 hours for four specific Urban Local Bodies: Kadapa Municipal Corporation, Rajampet Municipality, Mydukuru Municipality, and Tirupati Municipal Corporation. The extension applies to October 23 and 24.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), issued a joint statement expressing commitment to transparent elections while accusing the YSRCP of attempting to obstruct the process through conspiracies.
