Andifes issues public letter regarding 2026 Brazilian elections
The National Association of Directors of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Andifes) has released a public letter to Brazilian society regarding the 2026 general elections. Representing 71 federal universities and over 300 campuses across all regions of Brazil, the association outlines fundamental principles for the country's future.
The document emphasizes the defense of democracy, respect for the Constitution, and the sovereignty of the popular vote. It explicitly states that there is no room in a democratic project for authoritarianism, attacks on institutions, or attempts to discredit the electoral process without evidence.
Andifes also advocates for education and science to be treated as permanent state policies. The association calls for strong, autonomous, and inclusive public universities supported by predictable and compatible public funding. Key priorities include the promotion of affirmative action, student retention, and the fight against racism, violence, and discrimination. Additionally, the letter highlights the importance of scientific and technological development to address challenges such as climate change and artificial intelligence.
