Andon Labs releases Pion platform for autonomous AI businesses
Andon Labs has released Pion, a platform designed to allow AI agents to operate businesses fully autonomously. The project is the result of nearly two years of research into the ability of AI systems to acquire resources and manage operations in the real world.
The development of Pion was preceded by Vending-Bench, a simulation used to measure how well large language models can manage a vending machine business over a simulated year. While early models struggled with long-term planning and repetitive loops, newer models like Claude Opus 4 have successfully surpassed human baselines in these simulations.
To move beyond theoretical simulations, Andon Labs transitioned to real-world deployments, including managing vending machines, stores, and cafes. The release of Pion aims to allow more users to experiment with autonomous business models and study the capabilities and failures of AI in practical settings.
