Andong townships declared special disaster zones after heavy rain
Three townships in Andong—Iljik-myeon, Namseon-myeon, and Imha-myeon—have been declared special disaster zones following heavy rainfall between July 8 and July 24. The designation comes after a joint investigation by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety confirmed that the total damage in Andong reached 3.94 billion won, exceeding the 3.3 billion won threshold required for national treasury support.
The specific townships also met the individual criteria for designation, with damages exceeding 825 million won each. As a result of the declaration, the central government will provide additional national funds to help cover recovery costs, reducing the financial burden on the local government.
Affected residents are also eligible for indirect support, including deferrals on national and local tax payments and reductions in public utility charges. Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang stated that the city will focus all administrative efforts on systematic recovery to help residents return to their daily lives as quickly as possible.
