Andong wildfire victims face housing delays and safety incidents

Residents living in temporary housing for wildfire victims in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, continue to face hardships as reconstruction efforts face delays and safety incidents. While some residents have successfully moved into newly built homes, many others remain in cramped temporary units due to construction timelines being pushed back to late November.

In a recent incident at a temporary housing site in Gilan-myeon, a utility pole collapsed during the demolition of a temporary residential complex, striking a nearby house and damaging a wall. Although no direct injuries were reported from the impact, an elderly resident was transported to the hospital after experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath. Local residents have raised concerns regarding the cause of the collapse, questioning whether it was due to the demolition process, the age of the pole, or issues with the ground stability caused by recent soil embankment work.

Andong officials stated that Korea Electric Power Corporation is investigating the cause of the accident, and compensation procedures will follow the investigation. Meanwhile, displaced residents continue to struggle with limited mobility and inadequate living spaces as they await the completion of permanent housing.
