Andorra evaluates 10 million euro biomethanization plant

Andorra is evaluating the implementation of a biomethanization plant to process organic matter and store the resulting methane for use in cogeneration plants. The project, estimated to cost over 10 million euros, is being studied for potential inclusion in future Ctrasa investments. Because Andorra produces a relatively small amount of organic waste—approximately 10,000 tonnes—officials are considering a model that imports waste from surrounding regions to ensure the facility's economic viability.

In a related local development, the parish of La Massana has launched a pilot program for domestic organic waste separation. Currently, approximately 31 residents are participating in the voluntary scheme, which uses a composting plant near Santa Caterina Park. The facility has the capacity to handle significantly higher volumes, and local authorities plan to increase the number of collection points to encourage broader participation.
