Andorra hydroelectric production faces 40% drop risk in extreme drought
A study by AR+I regarding water resources in Andorra indicates that hydroelectric production could drop by nearly 40% during episodes of extreme drought. While hydroelectricity is a cornerstone of the nation's energy, with the FEDA hydroelectric plant contributing approximately 65% of Andorra's electricity, the impact of climate change varies by scenario.
Under moderate climate change scenarios, annual water resources might decrease by between 5.3% and 8.5% by 2050. In these cases, hydroelectric production may remain stable because the primary challenge is not just total volume, but the seasonal distribution of water. Researchers project a shift in availability, with increased resources in winter and reductions during late spring and late summer.
Recent data shows significant monthly variability in national electricity production. In August, production reached 5,968 MWh, a 41.3% decrease compared to the 10,161 MWh generated in August 2025.
