Andorra tenants fear eviction after building sale

Tenants of building No. 16 on Avinguda del Fener in Escaldes, Andorra, are awaiting news from the new owners after the former landlord sold the property to a real‑estate firm. The block contains 36 apartments and several commercial units, most of which have already been sold individually. Around 60 % of the residents are elderly, and they worry that the new owners will raise rents or force them to leave, leaving them vulnerable in a country where housing is already scarce.

Residents such as 82‑year‑old Pilar Izquierdo say they are prepared to stay unless the rent increase becomes unaffordable, while others, like 50‑year‑old Cecília Manzo, consider moving to France if conditions worsen. Some tenants are willing to accept a reasonable increase if it comes with renovations. The group has called on the Andorran government to intervene and protect their rights, and a few are consulting lawyers to defend against possible evictions.
