Andorra tops list of countries where tourists outnumber residents

Andorra receives about 4.2 million international visitors each year while its population is just 82 000, giving roughly 51 tourists per resident – more than five times the ratio recorded by Monaco, which ranks second. The data, compiled from UN Tourism statistics and World Bank population figures by Visual Capitalist, shows that many small island states dominate the ranking: Malta records 6.3 tourists per resident, Iceland 5.6, the Bahamas 4.7, Antigua and Barbuda 3.5 and Barbados 2.5. In the Indian Ocean, the Maldives and Seychelles register 3.2 and 2.8 visitors per resident respectively. Larger nations also appear, with Croatia at 4.0, Austria 2.9 and Portugal 2.7 tourists per resident. Tourism contributes roughly four‑fifths of Andorra’s GDP, driven by ski resorts, spa centres, mountain scenery and a long‑standing duty‑free status.
