André Ayew defends Asamoah Gyan over 2010 World Cup exit

Former Ghana captain André Ayew has addressed the lasting impact of Ghana’s quarter-final elimination during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Ayew defended striker Asamoah Gyan against years of criticism regarding his missed penalty against Uruguay.

Ayew emphasized that the team did not blame Gyan for the outcome, noting that the striker's contributions were essential to the Black Stars' historic run. Instead, Ayew pointed to Luis Suárez’s controversial handball on the goal line as the moment that “killed the hopes of not just Ghana, but the whole continent.”

The incident occurred in the closing stages of extra time when Suárez prevented a certain goal with his hands, resulting in a red card and a penalty for Ghana. Gyan’s subsequent shot struck the crossbar, leading to a penalty shootout which Ghana lost 4-2. The defeat prevented the nation from becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final.
