André Carrilho recognized for Gaza editorial cartoon
Portuguese cartoonist André Carrilho has been named a finalist for the European Cartoon Award for his work titled “Gaza, for the History of Horror.” The illustration, which was previously awarded the Grand Prix at the 19th World Press Cartoon Oeiras, depicts a boy with amputated limbs standing on a pedestal among ancient mutilated statues, critiquing the role of civilized society as a spectator to ongoing violence.
Carrilho stated that the piece was inspired by a sense of helplessness and responsibility regarding the images of horror emerging from Gaza. The European Cartoon Award, which features over 400 entries from approximately 30 countries, will announce its winner on November 27 in the Netherlands. The competition focuses on editorial cartoons addressing global crises, including climate change and international conflicts.
