Exército do Lula WhatsApp channel reinstated by TSE

The WhatsApp channel ‘Exército do Lula’, managed by Federal Deputy André Janones and used to support President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign, has been reinstated following a series of judicial disputes. TSE President Kassio Nunes Marques initially ordered the channel's suspension due to a lack of formal registration and allegations of disinformation from Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign. However, after the Lula campaign officially registered the channel with the TSE, Nunes Marques reconsidered and ordered its immediate reactivation, waiving the previous 48-hour waiting period.

The TSE also unanimously approved a change to its regulations, removing the 48-hour requirement for electronic channels registered between the first and second election rounds to facilitate digital communication.

The legal controversy has led to significant backlash. The Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD) filed a request for the recusal of Minister Nunes Marques, alleging partiality and claiming his decisions were abusive and favored one candidate over another. Additionally, Deputy Rui Falcão has petitioned the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to investigate Nunes Marques’ conduct and seek his removal from the TSE presidency, citing potential partisan bias.
