André Janones rejects ministerial role and expands digital strategy

Brazilian Federal Deputy André Janones, a key figure in Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s digital mobilization strategy, has announced he will not accept a position in the incoming administration. Janones intends to remain in the Chamber of Deputies and maintain his affiliation with the Rede party, stating that his presence in the legislature is more vital for providing the president with political support against a conservative-majority Congress.

Janones gained prominence for leading the “Exército do Lula” WhatsApp channel, which grew to over 10 million members during the presidential campaign. This digital mobilization model has gained international attention, inspiring left-wing groups in Argentina, France, and Spain to adopt similar direct-to-consumer communication tactics to bypass traditional algorithms.

In Argentina, Janones met with former presidential candidate Sergio Massa to discuss potential advisory roles for the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, in Brazil, Janones has publicly criticized allies of the president for engaging in disputes over individual credit for the election victory, warning that such vanity distracts from the political challenges posed by the strengthened right-wing presence in the National Congress.
