André Lewis resigns from Guyana Parliament amid sexual assault probe
Dr. André Lewis, a Member of Parliament for the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, has resigned from Guyana’s National Assembly following a police investigation into sexual assault allegations. The allegations reportedly involve a person who was a minor at the time of the alleged conduct.
Lewis submitted his resignation to Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, effective upon receipt. In his resignation letter, Lewis stated that stepping down was the appropriate course of action due to the responsibilities of public office while investigations are ongoing, but emphasized that his departure is not an admission of wrongdoing or a finding of guilt.
Reports indicate that Lewis was previously arrested and questioned by investigators at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station before being released. WIN Leader Azruddin Mohamed had formally notified the Speaker of the allegations. Lewis, who entered Parliament following the 2025 General and Regional Elections, remains committed to allowing authorities to conduct their investigation.
