Andrea Abodi seeks League status for women's Serie A

Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi has called for the institutional recognition of the women's Serie A, proposing that it be granted the status of a League and a dedicated seat on the Federal Council. Abodi argued that the current structure lacks representative autonomy compared to the men's game, which limits the ability of female athletes to influence strategic federal decisions and participate in policy-making.

To support this transition toward greater autonomy, the government has implemented Law 142 of 2026. This legislation mandates that 0.5% of sports audiovisual rights be allocated directly to the organization of the women's Serie A. Abodi described this financial measure as a starting point rather than a final goal, intended to provide a structural economic base for independent management and targeted investments in the tournament's infrastructure.
