Andrea Agnelli seeks new hearing after EU Court ruling on Juventus sanctions

Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has formally re‑opened his legal challenge against the disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). On 24 July he filed a request for a hearing before the Administrative Court of Lazio (TAR) following the European Court of Justice’s landmark decision on 16 July, which affirmed that such sanctions must be subject to effective judicial review under EU law.

The EU Court clarified that national rules limiting the authority of state judges could conflict with community law, prompting Italian judges to assess the legitimacy of the FIGC measures. The upcoming TAR hearing could reshape the boundaries of sanctioning powers within Italian football and set a precedent for sports governance across the country.
