Andrea Delmastro: Appeal court confirms sentence for revealing official secrets
The Rome Court of Appeal has released the motivations for confirming the eight-month sentence of former Undersecretary of Justice Andrea Delmastro. Delmastro was convicted of revealing official secrets in connection with the case of anarchist Alfredo Cospito.
According to the court's findings, Delmastro obtained secret information from the head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) and passed it to Deputy Donzelli. The judges stated that Delmastro acted with the intent of using the information for political purposes, despite being aware of the public nature of parliamentary proceedings.
The court rejected defense arguments claiming the defendant acted in good faith by providing the information within the parliamentary Transatlantico. While the Deputy Prosecutor General had requested an acquittal on the grounds that the act did not constitute a crime, the appellate judges upheld the original conviction.
