Andrea Phipps, Matriarch of Phipps Stable and Co‑Owner of Kentucky Derby Winner, Dies at 82

Andrea “Ande” Phipps, the matriarch of the storied Phipps Stable, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in New York City after a short illness, aged 82. She was co‑owner and breeder of Golden Tempo, the horse that won the 2026 Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs and the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga, skipping the Preakness. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to win the Derby with Golden Tempo.

Phipps, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and former registered nurse, helped build a century‑old racing dynasty. She is survived by six children, 24 grandchildren and two great‑grandchildren. The family requested donations to Let’s Win Pancreatic Cancer and the Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation in lieu of flowers.
