Andrea Vavassori protests proposed ATP cuts to doubles prize money

Tennis player Andrea Vavassori has expressed strong opposition to proposed ATP changes for 2028 that could significantly reduce prize money and the number of participating pairs in doubles competitions.

As a member of the ATP Player Advisory Council, Vavassori stated that the current direction aims to shift financial resources from doubles to singles rather than reinvesting in the growth of the doubles discipline. He noted that the proposed changes could shift the resource distribution from an 80%-20% split to a 90%-10% split, which he described as a lack of respect for doubles professionals.

Vavassori criticized the lack of a comprehensive plan to improve marketing or promotion for doubles, suggesting the focus has instead been on how to save money by cutting funds from the category. He also highlighted concerns regarding player burnout due to demanding schedules.
