Andrea Zlatar Violić, former Croatian Minister of Culture, dies at 65

Andrea Zlatar Violić, a prominent Croatian literary theorist, professor, and former Minister of Culture, has passed away at the age of 65.

Zlatar Violić served as the Minister of Culture in the government of Zoran Milanović from 2011 to 2015. She resigned from her political position in March 2015 following a controversy regarding the use of official credit cards. She maintained that she had not damaged the state budget and had attempted to repay the disputed amounts through salary deductions.

Beyond her political career, she was a highly respected academic at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, where she worked as a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature. Her scientific work focused on medieval autobiography, contemporary Croatian literature, and the relationship between text, body, and trauma. She was a prolific author of numerous books and essays and served as an editor for various publications, including Studentski list and Radio 101.

Her contributions to culture were recognized internationally, including being awarded the Order of the Knight of Literature and the Arts by the French government. She was a member of the Croatian Writers' Association and the Croatian PEN Center.
