Andreas Braqulias, founding member of Mera25 and DiEM25, dies suddenly in Crete
Andreas Braqulias, a founding member of the Greek left‑wing party Mera25 and the pan‑European movement DiEM25, died unexpectedly on Monday 3 August while on holiday in Crete. Born in Athens in 1971, he studied biochemistry and bioinformatics in London and was active on climate‑change and sustainable‑development issues.
Within the parties he served on the Central Committee, coordinated the Attica regional committee, was a member of the OESKE, and participated in the A’ Athens organization, helping to strengthen the alliance between Mera25 and United Left. Both Mera25 and DiEM25 issued statements describing him as “σπουδαίος συνοδοιπόρος, πραγματικός σύντροφος και υπέροχος άνθρωπος” (a great companion, true comrade and wonderful person) and praised his solidarity, internationalist spirit and constant presence at events and meetings.
His funeral is scheduled for Friday 7 August at 12:30 at the First Cemetery of Athens.
