Tadej Pogačar withdraws from Vuelta a España after serious crash

The Vuelta a España has been significantly impacted by major crashes involving key riders. Race leader Tadej Pogačar was forced to withdraw during the 8th stage after a heavy fall approximately 32 kilometers from the finish line. Medical reports indicate Pogačar sustained a concussion, a displaced fracture of the left clavicle, and a stable fracture of the C7 cervical vertebra. His team, UAE Team Emirates, is prioritizing his recovery, noting that surgery for the clavicle will be postponed due to the concussion.

Following Pogačar's withdrawal, Enric Mas has taken the red jersey and the overall lead in the general classification. The 8th stage, which ran from Puçol to Xeraco, was won in a sprint by Bryan Coquard.

In a separate incident, Belgian rider Luca Van Boven of Lotto-Intermarché was also forced to abandon the race. After a violent crash involving contact with another rider, Van Boven was diagnosed with two broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He spent time in a Spanish hospital for observation following the incident.
