Andreessen Horowitz renames crypto unit to a16z Frontier

Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has announced that its crypto-focused unit, a16z Crypto, will be renamed a16z Frontier. The rebranding accompanies a shift in the mandate for its fifth fund, which closed in May at $2.2 billion.

While the firm maintains it is not abandoning cryptocurrency, the new designation allows the fund to invest in a broader range of emerging technologies. This includes artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, robotics, biomedicine, and infrastructure for software agents. This marks a departure from previous statements made in May, when a spokesperson indicated the $2.2 billion vehicle would be 100 percent dedicated to crypto entrepreneurs.

The firm has not disclosed the specific allocation of capital between crypto and non-crypto technologies. The transition comes as investors increasingly look toward the intersection of AI and blockchain, seeking commercial utility in products that combine multiple technological layers.
