Andrei Madan: Truck driver and wood sculptor from Cojușna
Andrei Madan, a long-haul truck driver from the village of Cojușna in the Strășeni district, has transformed his passion for woodworking into a unique outdoor art exhibition. Having inherited his talent from his grandfather, a carpenter, Madan uses various pieces of wood—including logs, roots, and planks—to create sculptures of animals, birds, and figures from national history and folklore.
Madan often practices his craft during long breaks between his international driving routes across Europe. He has utilized materials gathered during his travels, such as linden wood from Poland and planks from Hungary, to create works including portraits and cultural figures. His collection features characters like Ilene Cosânzene, Stefan cel Mare, and a depiction of Veronica Micle.
The sculpting process requires precision and patience, utilizing tools such as hardened steel chisels and knives. Madan emphasizes the importance of properly drying the wood to prevent cracking before beginning the intricate work of shaping the art.
